As a developed country, South Korea has a long and rich history. However, in recent years, there’s been a growing phenomenon associated with South Korea—K-pop. The term “K-pop” stands for Korean pop music, a genre that includes bands and idols. K-pop has its roots in South Korea’s entertainment culture, which started with the first generation of idols and has now reached its sixth generation. This shows just how deeply K-pop is ingrained in South Korean culture, and it’s not just limited to Korea; K-pop has gained international recognition as well.
K-Pop and Me
when did you first know K-pop?
The first time I knew about KPOP was when I was at home in the summer vacation of my third grade. Because I couldn’t go to school, I was bored every day, and I accidentally heard Black Pink songs.
why did you start to listen to K-pop?
The first time I listened to it seriously was after I knew Black Pink, because I thought their songs were super good. Later, I listened to a lot of KPOP songs, and basically didn’t listen to Chinese songs
what do you like about it?
I think the music of Kpop is very new, because there are many bands in it, so each team’s style is different, and the style of the songs is different
Why Is K-Pop So Popular?
To understand why K-pop is so popular, I asked my friend for his perspective. He explained that the answer is quite simple—it’s all about economics. South Korea’s GDP benefits significantly from K-pop, particularly through concert revenue and tourism. In 2021 alone, South Korea’s K-pop industry generated an impressive $730 million from music sales and streaming alone. This figure doesn’t even include the revenue from concerts, merchandise, or tourism, which suggests that K-pop is a massive economic driver for the country.
Moreover, K-pop’s influence extends far beyond South Korea. For example, BTS, one of the most famous K-pop groups, made headlines when they visited the White House and took a photo with President Joe Biden. Jin, a member of BTS, also played a prominent role as the representative of the Korean torch at the Olympic Games this year. Also, K-pop was introduced as one of the most important parts of South Korea. These moments highlight how K-pop is not just entertainment but a significant part of South Korean identity and global culture.
The Future of K-Pop
In my opinion, K-pop’s influence will only continue to grow in the future. More and more people around the world are becoming fans, and K-pop is on its way to becoming an integral part of Korean culture. As it gains more international recognition, K-pop will likely continue to be a source of pride for South Korea and a significant contributor to its global image.
