I wanted to have my own life, learn what I was interested in, and do the things I wanted to do. Because of this, my mother allowed my brother and me to go abroad to study.

In my imagination, studying abroad would be easy and enjoyable. I thought I would not have to wake up early every day to study, and the classes would be more relaxed because there would be fewer classes compared to high school. At the same time, there would be many clubs where I could join activities I liked, meet new friends, and spend time together. I also thought that these friends might help me in my future career.

With these thoughts in mind, I asked my brother, who is currently studying in the United States, four questions about the things I was most curious about. The first question was, “What is the biggest difference between your life in the United States and your life in China?” The second question was, “What are the differences in food and diet?” The third question was about interpersonal relationships and friendships, such as whether friendships become weaker when people have not seen each other for a long time.

I thought my brother would say that people in the United States are very friendly, that he made many friends from different countries, and that the food was amazing, with hamburgers, fries, and fried chicken being delicious. However, his answers surprised me.

For the first question, he said that the biggest difference between studying abroad and studying in China is the need for self-discipline and the ability to study independently. Nobody will remind you what to do, so you have to manage everything by yourself. In school life, you need to handle many things on your own, such as finding information, paying rent, and attending classes on time. He told me that schools usually have websites where students can find information, but if you cannot find something, you have to solve the problem yourself. He said that having to deal with everything independently was one of the most challenging parts of studying abroad.

At the same time, my brother also said that foreign food was not as good as he expected because it often consisted of fried chicken and hamburgers, and many restaurants served similar food every day. He also mentioned that the food was often very sweet. This may be because people from different cultures have different eating habits. For example, many Chinese people who enjoy sweet foods may also prefer spicy or salty flavors.

The third question I cared about the most was whether he would make more friends abroad and whether friendships would change over time. He answered that he did meet more people from different countries and made many new friends. However, his close friends in China did not become less important. He said that true friendships do not disappear because of time or distance. If a friendship changes easily because people are far away, then it may not have been a strong friendship in the first place.

Finally, I realized that life in China can be more convenient because it is easier to find the food we like, and many daily activities are more convenient. However, studying abroad also has its advantages. We can meet people from different backgrounds, experience different cultures, and become more independent. I think when we are young, we should explore more places and experience different ways of life.

When I was young, I thought it would be a happy thing to escape from my parents.
